About Shell Business Operations: The aim of the Shell Business Operations, Chennai is to provide the Group with operational excellence through highlighting and utilizing process improvements and functional efficiencies as well as by leveraging economies of scale. Currently, the Chennai centre provides a wide range of finance, accounting and business services to Shell operating companies across several business sectors globally.
Set up in September 2007, the Chennai centre has grown rapidly and now, in its fourth year of operations, it has crossed the 1600 staff mark. The centre is located in the RMZ Millennia Business Park, where the Shell campus is a LEED Platinum building with world class infrastructure. The business is expected to grow further over the next two years and infrastructural additions to support this have been planned.
The main focus in Chennai is on Finance Operations which supports delivery of the global Finance functional plan. There is also a - Downstream India- Customer Services Team that handles lubricant depot ordering within the country. The Shell Business Operations (SBO Team) manages the centre facilities and supports business partners- operations on site. There is a strong focus at SBO on safety & well being of staff and on its three core values: Compliance, Intervention & Respect.
Position Description - Purpose:
Shell- s Trading & Supply network integrates the strengths of Supply & Distribution, with its sharp focus on end-to-end value optimization, with the innovative and customer-focused global Trading, wholesale commercial fuels and shipping network: Oil trading, Whole Sale Commercial Fuels, LNG trading and Gas & Power trading in Europe and North America.
The Operations Manager Price Risk leads a team within the Shell Business Operations Centre in Chennai that is responsible for developing, amalgamating, monitoring and assessing global and regional price exposures and related data and reporting to help ensure accuracy and consistency of global measurement. The Operations Manager Price Risk provides dedicated leadership and supervisory support to Trading & Supply teams, 40+ FTE based in Chennai & Manila, who provide management Information, Planning and Analysis to the Trading & Supply Business and are an integral part of T&S Business and Finance Community.
The Operations Manager Price Risk is a member of the Hydrocarbon Finance Leadership Team as well as member of the Global Trading & Supply Risk Control Leadership Team with peers based in London, Houston and Singapore.
Position Description - Accountabilities:
Leadership
- Engaging with all key stakeholders - T&S, Finance, IT and the Global Trading & Supply Risk Control Organization to ensure that all requirements and demands are managed successfully.
- Take a holistic overview of end to end processes in Shell Trading ensuring Risk Control activity compliments existing Finance Operations SSSC activities.
- Understanding and communicating effectively the statistical modeling inherent in many risk measurement techniques (Value at Risk and stress-testing)
- Ensuring that in a highly specialized and technical activity, due attention is paid to training and development of risk team members to guarantee that the activity remains sustainable.
- Embed the culture of partnering with the onshore T&S Risk functions.
- Develop a level of expertise in risk management practice and applications
Reporting
- Assist with the design and ongoing support/maintenance of exposure reports (including physical and derivative positions) and their future enhancement
- Further develop Trading & Supply risk management performance metrics as necessary
- Monitor and report any exposure deviations from acceptable levels
- Perform related market data analysis and reporting as required
Decision-Making
- A key aspect of this job is to ensure that exposure data is reported on an accurate and timely basis. This is a very time sensitive function as key operational and financial decisions are made based on the results of data provided from this role. This is true from both a day-to-day operational perspective as well as from historical and forecasting perspective.
- The role involves identifying and flagging exposure profiles that seem abnormal and those that may require more active risk management .This includes performing data drill downs to understand root causes of changes and deviations and making judgments to validate that noticed abnormalities are correct
- The timeliness of delivery is critical in managing price exposure.
- Early detection of structural business changes that may be evident in data collection and data trend analysis will be a critical decision making function for this role.
- The role also involves stakeholder engagement to understand reasons behind changes in data. Sometimes this is not forthcoming from business, so there is a need to decide on materiality of some information
Special Challenges
- A key challenge is on maintaining quality relationships and engagements with key business stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate data.
- Understanding the numbers and convincingly explaining the - story behind them-
- Ability to think within broadly defined risk mgt policies and objectives, balancing risk and return, and having sufficient commercial acumen to recognize advantageous trade offs
- Exploring opportunities to continuously improve tools and process.
Position Description - Dimensions:
This is a leadership role with five supervisors reporting and an overall organization of up to 50 reports.
Experience and Qualifications required:
- At least 13 years of professional experience with a numerate/analytical background as demonstrated by an MBA(premier institute)/Chartered Accountant.
- Deep experience is leadership and running a team with proven demonstration of the capacity, aptitude and relationships skills to guide an organization.
- The ideal candidate will be highly numerate, logical, have the ability to prioritize and multi-task, and be comfortable probing/challenging his/her team
- A good understanding of Oil Markets and the Supply business would be valuable
- Risk management knowledge or experience would be a strong plus.
- The successful candidate should be motivated to 'dig into conflicting data' and resolve issues while considering the impact upon the overall business.
