Department: Model Development
- The Model Development group focuses on developing industry leading stochastic catastrophe models for the quantification and management of catastrophe risk. From regional based earthquake and hurricane models to terrorism risk models, the industry and our 400+ clients recognize RMS as the largest developer of catastrophe models in the risk market. RMS continues to drive industry innovation with the enhancement and expansion of our leading models.
Objective:
- Responsibilities will include working with colleagues in both India and the US on the development of exposure and valuation (building, contents and business interruption) models for the U.S. and international countries; assisting with research related to enhancement and expantion of said models; reviewing and interpretating available data for benchmarking and trending; and act as an internal subject matter expert for exposure models, fielding internal questions and acting as a point of escalation for customer issues.
- Candidate is expected to develop country level industry exposure for various regions, for all perils, which is a representation of insured values by peril (for example, wind/fire and earthquake) and by line of business for insured property exposure using variety of database tools, analyzing and interpreting data, which can be further described as sampled company premium information, census demographics and economics data, building square footage data, and representative policy terms and conditions, using RMS technologies and trademark software. Candidate is also expected to coordinate with other groups such as Geocoding, Spatial Modeling, Software and Analytics during the model release. In this process, Candidate is expected to gain and further imbibe an in-depth knowledge of the products and relevant technologies.
Key Accountabilities & Deliverables:
- Identify, plan and execute continuous improvements in existing and future exposure models
Participate in reoccurring evaluations of vendors and data sets in order to determine their suitability for use in model development
- Synthesize and develop more creative and efficient developmental approaches for new models
Prepare concise to detailed documentation/presentation to share with both internal and client audiences
Support various other model development projects (such as collaborations with client development, and client driven projects) with ad-hoc analysis and reports
Experience Required:
- Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent from a leading university with a strong grounding in mathematical and statistical analysis.
- Experience in accessing and interpreting data and technical publications from various sources.
- Ability to write for technical and non-technical audiences and to interact effectively with members of analysis team and plan, conduct and disseminate results of research.
Successful Candidates:
- Should be detail oriented and be a team player with a high degree of self-motivation
- Have an ability to learn quickly
- Possess strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Have excellent written and verbal skills
- Have a solid to high proficiency in database programming and database architecture
- Should possess adequate knowledge of VBA or any other programming knowledge, such that candidate can create simple tools to automate repetitive tasks.
Desirable:
- Programming knowledge, preferably in both statistical and scientific languages (R, Matlab) and data manipulation tools (SQL, Microsoft Office); VBA and VB.Net is an added advantage as are a working knowledge of GIS tools (MapInfo, ArcInfo)
