Scope -
This role scope should be seen as being equivalent to that of Head of Credit underwriting.
As this is essentially a green field project with no specialized, central function in place the remit is that of build, operate and transfer.
The focus of the role will be as follows -
1. Review and input into future specialist credit function structure and design and ensure best practice is being followed
2. Drive the build and establishment of the new Credit function, including people, processes, policies, procedures, rules, models and manage the transfer of knowledge and expertise from branches into the newly centralized function
3. Ensure the right people, processes, tools and capabilities are in place for the smooth running of the function and establish and stabilize all aspects to ensure the business can scale efficiently without increasing the risk of incorrect or inconsistent lending decisions.
Project Deliverable's/Target Outcomes -
- The 9-12-month aspiration is to get the business to a position of hygiene and a sound base foundation from which they can increase sophistication and complexity in their approach to credit decisions - e.g use of alternative data and analytics. This includes the delivery of the following:
- Establishment and stabilization of a fit for purpose specialized Credit underwriting function as specified within the design phase which represents a center of excellence and follows best practice.
- Implementation of the necessary processes, policies and procedures required that enable standardization, repeat-ability and auditable rules based decision making that follows the overall lending strategy and risk appetite
- Building up of the internal capability and knowledge and design of the future roadmap of how the function can evolve in the future to leverage new progressive and innovative approaches to lending decisions
Key Skills/Experience needed -
Senior Credit underwriting professional who has lead the establishment or transformation of a Credit function within a bank, NBFC or equivalent lending institution in India.
- Experience of centralized credit functions and associated best practice, and specifically movement from a de-centralized to centralized model. Ability to define and produce lending policies, models and rules and embed a standardized approach across the business.
- Experience of 8-12 years within a Bank or NBFC and specifically housing finance (ideal but not mandatory).
- Held senior credit roles within scaling businesses.
- Worked in a project/programme environment
- Thrives in fast paced agile environment and able to bring clarity to ambiguous and ill-defined situations.
- Strong communicator.
- Good reputation and network within the NBFC/lending industry.
- Strong understanding of the necessary Credit processes and policies for a business of this nature as well as knowledge of more progressive and innovative approaches to lending decisions
- Deep understanding of credit policy for housing finance and mortgages.
- Understanding of the details of setting up a robust credit underwriting model for a Bank/ NBFC and leveraging data analytics.
Duration: 9-12 months (option for move to permanent with mutually agreeable)
