Your team responsibilities :
MSCI ESG Research is seeking an ESG Research Senior Associate to join our Models and R&D team, which is responsible for developing new methodologies and innovative frameworks to quantify environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks. The selected candidate will primarily support R&D and ratings methodology projects for MSCI's ESG Ratings product, which is used by institutional investors to integrate ESG risks in their fundamental research, portfolio construction, and risk management capabilities.
We are seeking an individual with strong quantitative and problem-solving skills as well as an interest in ESG issues, including how investors integrate ESG factors into their investment processes. Critical thinking, curiosity, and an ability to overcome data challenges with creative solutions are essential to thrive in this high impact role. We prefer candidates with experience in developing or evaluating ESG frameworks, applied statistics, data science, alternative datasets.

Your key responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development of new models and maintenance of existing ones, particularly with regards to (but not limited to) assessing climate risk, sustainable impact themes, human capital
- Develop company sustainability assessment framework for various asset classes (equity, fixed income, private assets)
- Evaluate new data sources and identify potential applications to ESG Ratings and mining large datasets (structured and unstructured) by cleansing, transforming and modelling the data
- Conduct back-testing and scenario analysis of proposed methodology enhancements to understand implications on ESG Ratings
- Use statistical methods and programing to analyze, interpret and visualize data and the results
- Your skills and experience that will help you excel
- Excellent quantitative skills and prior experience in the development of quantitative models
- Familiarity with ESG, climate and sustainability related concepts and themes is desired
- Strong analytical capabilities and advanced skills in statistics and programing language (e.g. Python) is a must-have; experience in Microsoft Excel is preferred
- Ability to overcome data quality challenges with creative solutions, including familiarity with alternative, unstructured data
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to clearly articulate ideas and facilitate strong relations with a global team of industry research analysts, technology and operations teams.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum five years of full-time professional experience in:
- ESG research industry, or Quantitative research within financial services, or Data analyst roles within key industries
- Minimum of Bachelors' degree required; Advanced degree in related field (Finance, Computer Science or Engineering, Business) is preferred; completion or progress towards related professional degrees like CFA / CFA Certificate in ESG Investing, FRM/ SCR is preferred
- Experience with ESG analysis is not a pre-requisite, but candidate should have a demonstrated interest in how ESG issues are integrated into investment decisions
