Role- Legal Counsel
Reporting to- Regional Legal Counsel
Education- A tertiary qualification in law from a recognized and reputable academic institution. A CS degree will be an added advantage
Key responsibilities:
- Legal Procedures: Implement organizational policies relating to legal and regulatory compliance
- Outside Legal Advisors: In close co-ordination with the Regional Legal Counsel’s Office, establish a network of external lawyers and advisors in order to have in place the resources needed to address quickly, legal issues that require outside advice
- Handling and Co-ordination of Legal Matters: Provide management with timely, accurate and constructive legal advice and support while ensuring prompt communication and co-ordination of legal matters with the Regional Legal Counsel and the Corporate Law Group
- Commercial Laws: Ensure that cost-effective efforts are carried out to protect and promote the Company’s interests under applicable commercial laws and regulations
- Contracts: Ensure that all contracts and agreements executed in the Company’s interests, support its business plants, and are in compliance with the applicable law as well as the organizational policies and guidelines
- Marketing,Sales and Distribution: Ensure that the Company’s marketing activities comply fully with the applicable law and work with the management on the development and implementation of effective marketing, sales and distribution activities and strategies that are within the bounds of the law and protect the Company’s assets and personnel
- Labour/Employment: Provide assistance to the Company’s human resources management to ensure that employment contracts, collective bargaining agreements, and dismissal and discipline procedures are carried out in an effective manner, protecting and promoting the Company’s interests and ensuring that current and potential legal risks are identified and properly managed and that appropriate contingency plans are in place
- Environmental, Protection/Workplace Safety: Assist the Operations Department to understand the underlying legal issues, related to environmental protection and workplace safety, staying abreast of changes and potential changes to legislation and helping to prepare plans to ensure compliance with the law
- Property: Ensure that the Company’s tangible and intangible properties receive adequate legal protection, and address in a proactive manner any possible challenges to the Company’s property rights
- Criminal Law: Ensure that all reasonable and cost-effective measures are in place to deal with issues of criminal law at the Company or that may affect the company’s interests
- Changes in Law: Closely follow the proposed newly enacted laws of significance to the Company and keep the Regional Legal Counsel and the Leadership Team informed of any such developments
Must haves for this role:
- 6-10 years of experience in a relevant practice area (e.g.corporate law) including experience either in a private practice or in the legal department of an MNC setup. A combined background in both corporate organization and a law firm would be preferred
- In-depth knowledge of corporate, commercial law and corporate governance
- Demonstrated success in conducting formal presentations on legal issues
- Operating/living experience in a variety of cultures/geographies
