Katha is a grassroots Indian non-profit organization that for the last 25 years has been empowering children to become agents of change through quality education, teacher training, world-class book publishing. We have an innovative, proven education model that makes learning a fun, creative experience for children and teachers alike. Katha's programs currently reach over 80,000 underserved children across more than 85 schools and 120 slum communities across Delhi.

Katha has embarked on a major scale up plan to spread its innovative model to reach children across India and abroad. We are actively looking to build a highly-qualified team of professionals to spearhead Katha's fundraising, partnership development, and donor relations activities. Compensation will vary based on the experience level of applicants, but is competitive within the Indian non-profit sector. We are looking for experienced, highly-motivated professionals who are passionate to make a difference in the lives of children by working at a grassroots level and helping Katha achieve its ambitious scale up plans.

Position: Development Director

Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Development Director serves as a member of Katha's senior leadership team and actively participates in making strategic decisions affecting Katha non-profit activities. This position is responsible for all fundraising, donor relations and development activities.

- The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Katha Nonprofit's visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Development Director also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

- The position will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow Katha budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support.

- S/he will expand and diversify Katha Nonprofit's donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, S/he will work closely with Katha's Governing Council members and support them as they take on a more active fundraising role.

It is expected that the amount raised by Katha Nonprofit will increase in future years as s/he systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity.

Responsibilities:

- Actively work with the Executive Director and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.

- Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach

- Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position Katha Nonprofit ahead of major funding changes or trends

- Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders

- Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors

- Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program

- Identify, develop, and mentor the development team

Management and Financial Role:

- Preparing annual fundraising budgets in coordination with Team Leaders

- Recording, monitoring and reporting financial progress

- Administrative duties: updating databases, preparing reports, monitoring income and expenditure.

- Recruiting and managing volunteers for a fundraising project

Marketing and PR Role:

- Liaise with media and communication cell

- Liaise with publishing team to produce fundraising promotional material

Qualifications

- 10-plus years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)

- Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time

- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships

- Strong organizational skills

- Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives

- Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside XYZ Nonprofit

- Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred

- High energy and passion for Nonprofit's mission is essential

- Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan

- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail

- Customer focus

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
