THE POSITION
The Role
As the title suggests, the General Manager Legal will be a part India Legal team and will have pan-India responsibility for the legal and secretarial function in India. The candidate will work with and support India Director Legal in ensuring that all legal issues pertaining to India are duly attended to and addressed.
Legal. S/he will work closely with India Director Legal and India management team, comprising the regional heads and various functional heads, to achieve Company and Legal Department objectives. S/He will provide a broad spectrum of legal support to all aspects of our Indian operations, general legal advice, employment law matters, general litigation, tax litigation, commercial contracts, competition, etc. General Manager Legal will also be required to work on contentious litigations, including high value tax litigation. S/he will have the ability to resolve complex technical issues, recognize the need for and seek out internal or external subject matter expertise, direct research and effectively litigations, including outside counsel. This individual will have an aptitude for systems-building, be able to craft and implement policy, critically review and strengthen current processes and systems. S/he will manage and optimize use of external counsel, as well as develop external law firm resources where desirable. S/He will lead, motivate and deploy a legal team currently comprising of 4 qualified lawyers (including a Company Secretary) and one trainee.
Compliance. In terms of Compliance, the General Manager Legal will work closely with India Director Legal and India Ethics & Compliance Officer for ongoing compliance efforts, manage legal risk and legal compliance programs. Members of the legal department often work jointly and in consultation with the Ethics & Compliance Officer to investigate allegations of wrongdoing and to participate in compliance audits as part of a cross-functional team. Familiarity with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and antitrust laws will be advantageous.
THE IDEAL CANDIATE
We seek a mature, energetic and commercially savvy lawyer of 15+ years PQE. S/he must have the ability to organise, lead, mobilise and motivate teams. S/He should be a qualified Indian lawyer, with a blend of top-tier private practice experience as well as solid in-house experience with a multinational company. Cross border or regional experience will be advantageous. It is essential that s/he has had substantial commercial law experience with excellent drafting skills. The ideal candidate will be solutions-driven, task-oriented and well-organised, with the ability to tenaciously follow through in implementation of agreed actions; in other words, a consummate and effective project manager. In his/her role as an interface with India Management team, the candidate must be an excellent communicator, with the ability to distill complex issues and express with clarity, structure and conciseness.
