Position Summary
The person will oversee all content initiatives, both editorial and UGC, across multiple platforms and formats. The person will be an expert in all things related to content - planning, sourcing, creating and measuring effectiveness. The position requires the person to work closely with other departments - product, marketing, SEO, sales, design and technology.
The person will have to lead two content teams - editorial and UGC, working with them individually and together to create a holistic content strategy and execution for the product.
Responsibilities
Ultimately, the job of the head of content is to wear multiple hats - think like a publisher/journalist, leading the development of content initiatives in all forms and to marry the business needs with that of the user. This includes:
- Mapping a content strategy across streams
- Ensuring all content is planned methodically, keeping in mind the seasonality, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience for all channels of content including online, social media, newsletter, mobile.
- Set a tone to improve the quality of content continuously and to lead the team to create content that eventually establishes the product as a credible destination for all related content. By its nature, the content will have to be continuously evolving.
- The development of a functional content calendar across verticals, and define the owners in each vertical. Facilitate each of the owners to develop their verticals and take it forward.
- Supervise the team; be an arbiter of best practices in grammar, messaging, writing, and style.
- Conducting ongoing usability tests to gauge content effectiveness.
- Continuously analyse data and analytics and make recommendations based on those results. Working with owners of particular content to revise and measure particular content and traffic goals.
- Work with product and tech teams to implement requirements on the front and backend from a content perspective.
- Establish work flow for content editing, back-up for covering important events and conflict resolution.
- Supervising the maintenance of content inventories and matrices.
- Be aware and keep a close watch on competition and industry trends.
- Set guidelines for UGC content editing, sourcing and implementation.
- Run a 24x7 UGC operation in UGC content moderation.
Required
- 12-15 years of experience as a content creator, a significant part of which should be as a head of content in multichannel online content creation (publishing, journalism, etc.).
- Experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics.
- Expertise in all major business software applications (Adobe Creative Suite - Photoshop, basic HTML, Microsoft Office, etc.).
- HR-related experience including hiring, managing, performance reviews, compensation packages, etc. required.
- Audience development and subscription strategies experience a plus.
- Proven editorial skills. Outstanding command of the English language.
- Should have a - nose- for the story. Training in how to tell a story using words, images, or audio, and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience (it is critical that the person retains an - outsider's perspective- much like that of a journalist.)
- The ability to lead and inspire large teams of creative personnel and content creators to achieve company's stated goals.
- The ability to think like an educator, intuitively understanding what the audience needs to know and how they want to consume it.
- A passion for new technology tools and usage of those tools within your own blogs and social media outreach. Social presence with healthy number of followers a plus!
- Leadership skills required to define and manage a set of goals involving diverse contributors and content types.
- Project management skills to manage editorial schedules and deadlines.
- Good people skills.
- Fluency in web analytics tools (Google Analytics, ComScore), social media usage and SEO.
- A willingness to embrace change and to adapt strategies on the fly.
- Resourcefulness to lead the team to do identify, pitch to and bring on board the experts across various categories for new UGC initiatives.
