Business Analyst - E-Commerce
Business/Domain knowledge: must understand
- Expert in Product information Management Systems (PIMs) or E-commerce product data
- Should have a deep understanding of how E-commerce sites work and how the data is consumed by E-commerce sites.
- Should be able to create user flows for functionalities (Wireframes) and assure good user experience
- How different user personas will use different parts of the system.
- What are their general pain points.
- The operational/tactical pain points of users' day to day work.
- Clearly identify what kind of user experience is more valuable for each module/functionality. Ex: data entry efficiency is higher priority than UI aesthetics in SKU authoring.
- Impact/Gap analysis: when we are developing a new feature/functionality or modifying an existing one, the BA should :
- Have the ability to foresee if we have not missed anything.
- Be able to suggest alternative or better way to do things.
Technical prudence :
- The BA does not need to possess programming skills, but s/he must understand the high-level technology stack and architecture (how each tech layer talks to each other).
- Be able to estimate the shirt size work effort (complexity and coding labor), which will guide the implementation approach... basically must possess gut feel assessment power to gauge the potential LOE for certain types of work.
- This skill develops with time and experience.
- But the BA must have demonstrated this skill in other projects to prove that s/he understands the correctly channelized thought process needed to be good at this.
- Must abhor ambiguity but have the ability to thrive with nebulous and abstract ideas to give those concrete shape.
- Must be hands-on in creating sample data to explain ideas, and work with QA team to build test cases to demonstrate the common use cases.
- Act as an Interface with business stakeholders (management) to understand and create technology specifications for workable solutions within the product
Development process :
- Must have clear understanding of Agile methodology, and ability to quickly learn version of the process.
- Be comfortable navigating through Jira - ability to write/review Jira stories.
Communication :
- Should have strong verbal as well as written communication skills - proper English with decent vocabulary and articulation prowess!
- Must be excellent in pithy, to-the-point articulation of problems, suggestions, questions and answers.
- Ability to coordinate with developers and QA ensuring that there exists no ambiguity or misunderstanding.
Collaborative skills :
- The person should be proactive and collaborative with the team in Mumbai (even if he is working remotely). Must be a flexible with timings to assist overlaps of time.
