Description:
- The Global Accounting Policy and Advisory ('GAPA') group provides technical accounting guidance globally to all businesses and staff groups, monitors emerging GAAP (US and IFRS) and collaborates with business partners to develop and maintain the company's global accounting policies. GAPA has proven to be an excellent entrance point to American Express for individuals with a strong background in technical accounting who wish to gain broader experiences and leadership roles within the organization in future roles.
- This role will be a significant contributor in designing, establishing and communicating the Company's accounting policies, staying on the leading front of emerging US GAAP and some IFRS convergence and evaluating the impact of emerging accounting requirements. Additionally, this role will help support the Company's Accounting Items Log, Global Memorandum for Record process, Materiality Log and Out of Period adjustment process.
Responsibilities include:
Accounting policies:
- Collaborate with business partners (e.g., Controllers, Financial Reporting, etc.) to identify, develop and communicate additions or updates to global accounting policies.
- Partner with IFRS Centre of Excellence for the inclusion of IFRS into American Express accounting policies.
- Develop and execute a technical accounting training agenda for US GAAP users.
- Contribute to certain footnotes within the American Express Annual Report.
Emerging GAAP:
- Monitor, evaluate and communicate emerging accounting standards and requirements from the FASB, SEC and other regulatory entities throughout the controllership organization.
- Regularly compile updates and formulate opinions on emerging accounting issues for discussion with the Corporate Controller and the Controllership Leadership Team.
- Prepare newsletters and quarterly updates on emerging accounting issues throughout the controllership organization communicating the potential impact on the Company's financial results.
Technical Accounting Consultations:
- Partner and collaborate with Business Advisors (BA) and Accounting & Reporting Controllers, business/finance contacts and Subject Matter Experts from GAPA to understand and resolve the US GAAP technical requests and queries and provide thought leadership accordingly.
- Collaborate and review Memos for Record prepared by BA Controllers.
- Facilitate the use of Documentum.
- Develop technical accounting trainings for businesses and staff groups

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- CPA (or equivalent) with 6 years + of financial accounting experience.
- Experience in both a "Big-4" CPA firm and industry preferred.
- Excellent US GAAP technical accounting knowledge.
- Ability to research technical accounting issues thoroughly and appropriately.
- A successful track record of developing strong relationships across a broad range of leadership functions allowing the person to effectively influence and effect change.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely translate complex accounting terms into plain English.
- Strong project management skills with the capability to prioritize multiple demands.
- Be able to work as part of a team in a consultative environment, constantly working with various groups within AXP, as well as work independently on individual projects.
- Establish and maintain strong, collaborative partnerships with business partners.
